After the great success of Badhaai Ho starring Ayushman Khurana the makers are back with it’s sequel, Badhaai Do starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. The film, directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, is a comedy drama which went on floors on Tuesday.
Talking about the choice of his actors, Kulkarni told Mumbai Mirror in an interview: “Their characters are unique in that they incorporate comedy, certain goofiness and display some quirks. I could see only Raj and Bhumi playing them. And I’m confidence that the explosive chemistry between them will combust on screen.”
Pednekar took to Instagram and shared an image from the first day of the shoot in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. “Poori team ko #BadhaaiDo (Congratulate the entire team). To new beginnings!” the 31-year-old actor.
The storyline of Badhaai Ho revolved around how the dynamics of a family changed when a middle aged couple discovered that they are expecting a child again. The film portrayed how the society and their own family taunted them, judged them. Their own sons, played by Ayushman took a while to accept it. The film beautifully depicts all the emotions through which the couple went. The film was applauded and appreciated by the viewers as it was a fresh concept, away from the mainstream.
Badhaai Ho, the original movie, starring Neena Gupta, Gajendra Rao, Surekha Sikri, and Sanya Malhotra, was directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and had won a lot of laurels including two National Awards: best popular film providing wholesome entertainment and best supporting actress for Sikri for her role as the cantankerous matriarch who has a change of heart.
The upcoming film is written by Suman Adhikary and Akshat Ghildial, who had co-written Badhaai Ho!. Badhaai Do marks the first collaboration between Rao and Pednekar, who reportedly play a cop and a PT teacher, respectively.
Harshvardhan revealed, “We’re also tapping a big social issue with this film. It’s too early to reveal details. All I can say is that Badhaai Do is as much a family entertainer as Badhaai Ho, only the world we’re creating is becoming more diverse. It moves from a small town to a bigger one and then, on to something else. There’s a lot of colour and drama.”
Rajkumar in a statement, earlier shared,”I am happy things are picking pace and the wheel is moving again. Badhaai Do is a special film for me. I am glad to take up this nuanced character who has layers of conflicts to resolve in and around him. As far as preparations are concerned, I have my own process of preparing a character and also this time it is the setting of this character in Badhaai Do that makes it unique. The audience is in for a surprise, which will unfold with time. I am happy to reconnect with the audience on special occasion of Badhaai Ho anniversary, the film was an absolute delight and one of my most favourites.”
